Mental Health at the Workplace

Customised Solutions for a Healthier Workplace

Your Obligations as an Employer

From 1 October 2022, changes to Work, Health and Safety (WHS) Laws place an obligation on any person conducting a business or undertaking (PCBU) to manage psychosocial risks in the workplace in the same way that other physical risks to health and safety are dealt with under WHS legislation. PCBU must eliminate psychosocial risks in the workplace or if that is not reasonably practicable, minimise them so far as reasonably practicable.

A psychosocial hazard is defined as a hazard that may cause psychological harm (whether or
not it may cause physical harm). They arise from or relate to:
The design or management of work  A work environment
Plant at a workplace or  Workplace interactions or behaviours.

The implementation of the new WHS regulations on psychosocial risks is a warning for all employers to undertake risk assessments and review their policies and procedures relating to psychosocial hazards.

Empower Your Workplace

OLI’s Mental Health Training for Businesses

OLI offers a two stage training program for businesses to invest in the mental well being of your staff and provide your management team with the relevant training so they can understand their obligations under the new WHS laws.

Mental Health First Aid Awareness Training

This course is relevant to all staff. It provides an overall understanding of mental health and how to identify and respond to mental health crises. It offers practical advice on how to maintain your mental health and how to identify the early signs and symptoms of mental health illnesses.

Stage 2

Managing Work Related Psychological Health and Safety

This course is targeted to leaders and management within a business. It provides a framework for your key personnel to understand and establish requirements for managing work-related psychological health and safety.

The course covers the following modules:

1. How to identify and record work related psychosocial hazards in the workplace;

2. How to assess the risk of identified work related psychosocial hazards;

3. How to contribute to implementing risk controls for risks associated with identified work related psychosocial hazards; and

4. Review the effectiveness of risk controls for managing work related psychosocial health and safety risks.

Why Education and Training Matters

Education is empowerment. By educating your workforce and management team about mental health, you are creating a healthier, more productive and supportive environment.

Take a proactive approach to managing your WHS risks for psychosocial hazards by providing your team with the necessary training to be able to identify and manage these risks in the workplace. There are benefits to you as the employer and your staff by having a greater awareness and understanding of these risks and having strategies to minimise these risks.
